The Royal Bliss sits at the top of the PlushBeds range, and it is the only bed in the line where the material list is the whole story. Under a GOTS-certified organic cotton cover you get GOTS organic wool, cashmere, alpaca and horsetail hair, GOTS-certified organic Arpico latex, and organic calico coils.

PlushBeds says those coils are hand-sewn individually rather than heat-welded in a block, and describes hand side-stitching using techniques from the 1700s, compression tufting and more than 100 craftsman hours per mattress. Those are the brand's own claims about its process, not our finding.

What we can verify is the certification set: GOLS, GOTS, GreenGuard Gold, eco-INSTITUT and Control Union. Add three heights of 10, 12 and 14 inch, two firmnesses off the shelf with custom firmness by phone, and a build handmade in the USA in a certified organic facility.

Then the safety net: a 365-night trial and a lifetime warranty, the same protection the flagship Botanical Bliss carries. If the exotic fibres and the handmade construction are not what you are after, the Botanical gives you the same certifications and trial in a simpler all-latex build.

Keep in mind: Returning it inside the first 30 days carries a $99 convenience fee, and having the old mattress taken away is a $149 add-on, so both belong in the sum before you order.

What you actually get

Most mattress marketing lists materials. Here the material list is the product. The comfort layers use GOTS-certified organic wool and cotton alongside cashmere, alpaca and horsetail hair, over GOTS-certified organic Arpico latex and organic calico coils.

Calico coils are pocketed springs sewn into fabric; PlushBeds says its coils are hand-sewn individually rather than heat-welded into a block, which is the traditional method and the one that lets the springs move more independently.

The rest of the brand's account of the build, more than 100 craftsman hours per bed, hand side-stitching using techniques from the 1700s, compression tufting, is exactly that: the brand's account.

We can verify what a certificate covers, but nobody outside the factory can verify hours or stitching from a product page, so we do not present those details as our own finding.

Where it sits in the PlushBeds range

Four beds, four different arguments. This is the honest map, so you can buy down the range without feeling you missed something.

Two things worth noticing in that table. The Royal Bliss and the Botanical Bliss carry the same trial and the same warranty, so moving up the range buys you materials and construction, not a better safety net. • You want coil support for less. The Luxury Bliss hybrid keeps a certified-organic latex comfort layer over coils at the friendliest price in the line.
• You avoid animal materials. The Royal Bliss uses wool, cashmere, alpaca and horsetail hair. The Natural Bliss is the vegan, wool-free build.
• You already like your mattress and want a comfort change. A new bed is not the fix. A topper changes how firm your current bed feels for a fraction of the outlay.
