How we evaluate bedding
We want every pick on this site to be something you can sanity-check yourself. Here is exactly how our guides are put together, what each conclusion rests on, and where we stop.
Research-based, and we say so
RestVerdict is a research desk, not a sleep lab. Our guides are built from published manufacturer specifications, the brand's own FAQ and warranty terms, verified current pricing, and published testing by organisations that do run labs.
When we cite someone else's measurement, we name them in the text so you can weigh the source. If we have used a product ourselves, we say so explicitly and describe what we did. We never claim a hands-on test we did not perform.
The primary sources we lean on most, and name on the page wherever we use them:
- Sleep Foundation for independent product testing and general bedding guidance (for example topper lifespan and measured temperature performance).
- Manufacturer sources: the product page, specification sheet, FAQ and written warranty terms, treated as the brand's own claims, not as neutral facts.
- Verifiable awards and records traced to the body that issued them, such as the Inc. 5000 list, and framed for what they actually measure.
- Independent hands-on reviews where they exist, cited by name so you can judge the reviewer.
What we weigh
- Materials and construction: foam type and density, fill, cover fabric, and the certifications behind them.
- Fit for the stated sleeper: position, body weight, and whether a product is wrong for you rather than simply worse.
- Temperature behaviour, and whether any cooling claim has been measured by anyone independent.
- Care and durability: what can be washed, what the warranty actually covers, and for how long.
- Value: performance against price, not the lowest number on the page.
How we handle claims and ratings
A brand claim is a lead, not a fact. Awards, superlatives and health-adjacent claims get traced to a primary source before publication, and anything we cannot verify is either marked as an unverified brand claim or left out.
Owner ratings and star scores belong to the people and platforms that collected them: we quote those with attribution and never re-badge them as a RestVerdict score. Our own editorial scores are clearly labelled as our opinion, formed from the evidence shown on the page.
How prices are kept honest
Every specific price on a money page carries a visible "Prices checked" date, so you can see how old the claim is instead of trusting that someone remembered to update it.
When we re-verify, we re-verify the argument, not just the number: if a comparison was built on a price that has moved, the comparison gets rewritten, not merely restamped.
Where a seller's own arithmetic does not add up, as with a listing whose regular-price and savings figures disagreed with the per-size prices shown beside them, we publish the one figure we can stand behind and say why the rest is missing.
Checks that run on every build
Part of this method is enforced by machine, not memory. Before any page of this site can be published, an automated check suite has to pass.
It fails the whole build if, among other things: structured data says anything the visible page does not say word for word; a price stamp is older than our re-verification window; the affiliate disclosure page stops naming any program that can actually pay us; a page ships a rating markup of our own, which we never publish; or an internal link points at a page that does not exist.
A rule that lives only in a style guide gets skipped on a busy day. These cannot be.
What we will not do
We do not publish discount codes that expire, because a stale code leaves a wrong price sitting on the page. We do not present a company award as a product award. We do not write a pick with no downsides, because no product has none. On a review page, the only commercial link is our own disclosed one.
Our limits
Specifications and prices change, and comfort is genuinely personal: body weight, sleeping position and room temperature move the answer. Treat our guides as a well-sourced starting point, confirm current details on the seller's page, and buy where there is a clear trial or return policy.
Independence
We earn affiliate commissions on some links (disclosure), but payouts never decide our rankings. We tell you when a product is wrong for you even though saying so earns us nothing.
