Medium vs firm mattress: what changes between the two builds

By the RestVerdict Editorial Team. Published 25 September 2026.

A medium mattress gives a little at the top before the support takes over; a medium firm or firm one holds you nearer the surface. The difference is in the materials, not just the label.

We read it on one latex bed sold in both builds. The Med-Firm swaps both layers for firmer grades: the top goes from an ILD of 24 to 36, and the core from 24 to 29 up to 30 to 37.

Medium firm has no fixed number. Casper puts it at 5 to 6 out of 10; PlushBeds rates its Med-Firm beds at 7, 8 and 8.5. And none of those three PlushBeds beds sells a standard Firm.

If you are torn, the safer buy is a bed whose top layer can be swapped after delivery.

What changes inside: one bed, two builds

The PlushBeds Natural Bliss product page shows its Medium and Med-Firm builds as labelled layers, and prints a firmness guide that turns each label into an ILD, a lab figure for how hard a layer is to press down. Higher means firmer. Put together:

BuildTop latexTop ILDCore latexCore ILD
Medium build N2 (brand's Med-Soft grade)24 D75 (brand's Medium grade)24 to 29
Med-Firm build N4 (brand's Med-Firm grade)36 D85 (brand's Med-Firm grade)30 to 37

Layer codes from the build images, ILD from the page's firmness guide, read 25 September 2026.

Same bed, two builds: both layers change Medium build Top: N2 ILD 24 Core: D75 ILD 24 to 29 Med-Firm build Top: N4 ILD 36 Core: D85 ILD 30 to 37 Layer heights are not to scale: the brand gives no thicknesses.

The Natural Bliss Medium build puts an N2 latex top, ILD 24, over a D75 core, ILD 24 to 29. The Med-Firm build puts an N4 top, ILD 36, over a D85 core, ILD 30 to 37.

Each build is also shown with a second, three-layer stack that repeats the core. The page does not say which heights use which stack, or how thick any layer is, so the blocks here are equal on purpose.

Two things stand out. First, the firmer bed is firmer all the way down, not just a harder top. That matters if you plan to soften it later with a topper: you would be adding cushion over a firmer core.

Second, the Medium build is a blend. Its top layer is the grade the brand's own guide calls Med-Soft, over a Medium core. So "Medium" here describes the whole bed, not every layer in it.

One detail does not line up. The same firmness guide lists Medium as N3, while the Medium build image shows N2. We report both as printed. Why the two builds feel different is the same either way: the Med-Firm is one or two grades firmer in each layer.

Medium vs medium firm: the word moves

Medium firm sits between medium and firm, but its number changes with the maker, and even with the bed. PlushBeds prints these for its three adult latex beds:

BedMediumMed-Firm
Botanical Bliss5.5 out of 108 out of 10
Natural Bliss7 out of 108.5 out of 10
Eco Bliss5 out of 107 out of 10

Read from each PlushBeds product page, 25 September 2026.

Casper, another maker, lists medium firm at 5 to 6. So a medium firm bed from one brand can carry a lower number than a medium from another. What stays constant is the order within one bed: Med-Firm is always the firmer of the two builds.

Why the numbers drift, and why they cannot be compared across brands, is the subject of our guide to the mattress firmness scale.

Firm vs medium firm

The Natural Bliss firmness guide carries the next step up: Firm is N5, ILD 44, over D95, ILD 38 to 45. But none of the three PlushBeds beds above offers Firm as a standard option; each sells only Medium and Med-Firm.

So on these beds, "firm vs medium firm" is not a choice you can make; Med-Firm is the firmest stock build. For a bed that is sold as Firm, our plush vs firm mattress guide takes one hybrid sold as Firm, Cushion-Firm and Ultra Plush and shows which layer the Firm leaves out.

If you pick wrong: changing firmness later

Because latex beds are built from separate layers, some makers let you swap the top one after delivery. The terms differ even inside one brand:

BedWhat the page offersWhat it leaves unclear
Botanical BlissA one-time comfort exchange: a firmer or softer latex layer, "completely free" with no shipping charge in the contiguous USThe same sentence adds "for just a small deposit" with no amount; the returns policy puts it at $99, refunded
Natural Bliss"A free comfort exchange during your trial period", which the page puts at 100 nightsWhich trial applies: the returns policy gives bedroom mattresses 365 nights
Eco BlissA "365 Night Comfort Exchange" line in the page bannerThe terms themselves: none on the product page, only in the returns policy

Read from each PlushBeds product page, 25 September 2026.

PlushBeds’ returns policy is broader than any one product page: it gives every adult bedroom mattress a one-time comfort exchange during the trial, arranged by phone, with a $99 deposit that is refunded once the original top layer comes back.

A swap is cheaper than a return. On the Botanical Bliss, returning the bed within its first 30 days costs a $99 fee, and the optional removal service for a return is $149. Its page also states the trial two ways: a 365-night guarantee in the policy section and a 100-night trial in its FAQ. Ask which applies before you rely on it.

How to choose between medium and firm

  1. Decide how you like to lie. If you want to sink in a little, lean medium. If you want to lie on top and level, lean medium firm or firm.
  2. Read the brand's own guidance as guidance. PlushBeds points side sleepers to Medium and back and stomach sleepers to Med-Firm on its Botanical Bliss page. That is comfort advice, not a measurement.
  3. Compare numbers only inside one brand. A 7 is Medium on the Natural Bliss and Med-Firm on the Eco Bliss.
  4. Look at what changes inside. If a page shows the layers for each build, as the Natural Bliss does, that tells you more than the number.
  5. If you are unsure, buy the swap. A bed with a layer exchange turns a wrong guess into a delivery rather than a return.
  6. If two of you disagree, split it. The Botanical Bliss sells a Dual Firmness build, Medium on one side and Med-Firm on the other, in Split Queen, Split King and Split Cal King only.

Already own a bed that is a little too firm or too soft? A topper shifts the feel without replacing it. Our guide to what a mattress topper is covers how, and our firm mattress topper guide covers firming up a soft one.

What we are not telling you

Pages on this question lean on back pain, spine alignment and body weight cutoffs. We are not answering those, and we are not repeating the weight thresholds the brands print. Firmness for a medical need is not something we can check.

We have not slept on these builds or measured their layers. Everything above is what the maker publishes, read closely and lined up. How we decide what to recommend is in our method.

Common questions

What is the difference between a medium and a firm mattress?

A medium mattress gives more at the top, so you sink in a little before the support takes over. A firmer one holds you nearer the surface. On the latex bed we examined, the firmer build swaps both layers for firmer grades: the top goes from an ILD of 24 to 36 and the core from 24 to 29 up to 30 to 37.

Is medium firm the same as firm?

No. Medium firm sits between medium and firm, and where it sits depends on the maker. Casper lists medium firm at 5 to 6 out of 10 and firm at 7 to 8. PlushBeds rates its Med-Firm beds at 7, 8 and 8.5, and none of the three we checked sells a standard Firm option at all.

Is medium or firm better for side sleepers?

PlushBeds points side sleepers to Medium on both its Botanical Bliss and Natural Bliss pages, and back and stomach sleepers to Med-Firm. That is the brand's comfort guidance, not a measurement. How firm a given build feels to you also depends on your weight and on the bed you are used to.

Can you change a mattress from medium to firm after buying it?

On some latex beds, yes, because the top layer can be swapped. PlushBeds’ returns policy gives every adult bedroom mattress a one-time comfort exchange for a firmer or softer layer, against a $99 deposit refunded when the original layer comes back. The Botanical Bliss page describes the swap; the Natural Bliss page says 100 nights where the policy says 365. Confirm the terms in writing before you order.
