Dunlop vs Talalay latex
Dunlop and Talalay are not two materials. They are two ways of curing the same latex, and the difference is one step: Dunlop is poured into the mould in one go and left to settle as it bakes, so it comes out denser and firmer. Talalay is vacuum-expanded and flash-frozen before baking, so it comes out lighter, springier and more even all the way through.
Neither is better. They suit different jobs, and the useful question is what the layer has to do. Dunlop's density is what you want under you, in a support core or a firm topper. Talalay's consistency and spring are what you want closer to you, in a comfort layer or a pillow.
Cost follows the process: Talalay takes longer and more equipment, so it usually costs more. And neither process tells you a thing about how natural or organic the latex is, which is a separate question answered by the fibre content and the certification on the label.
If you only came for one of them: Talalay latex is natural latex that was vacuum-expanded in a part-filled mould and flash-frozen before baking.
That freezing step locks the cell structure in place before gravity can pull it downwards, which is why a Talalay layer is even from top to bottom, lighter for its size and springier under you, reaches genuinely soft as well as firm, and costs more than the same layer made the Dunlop way.
What Talalay latex is, on its own
Talalay is not a material and it is not a brand of latex. It is a moulding process, named after the family that developed it, applied to the same rubber tree sap that every other latex layer starts from.
Everything that gets said about how Talalay feels traces back to one step in that process, and it is worth separating the four things that are true of it from the things that are only claimed about it.
- The mould is only part-filled, then a vacuum expands the froth until it fills the space. The layer is built by expansion rather than by volume poured in.
- It is flash-frozen before it bakes. This is the step that defines the process: freezing fixes the bubble structure in place before gravity can settle the heavier particles downwards.
- The result is even from top to bottom. Because nothing settled, density is consistent through the layer rather than firmer underneath, which is the single practical difference you feel.
- It costs more. The process takes longer and needs more equipment, and that shows up in the price of the finished layer rather than in anything about the rubber itself.
Two things that Talalay is not, both of which are commonly assumed. It is not a purity claim: Talalay latex can be natural, synthetic or a blend, exactly like Dunlop, so the word on a listing tells you about the mould and nothing about the content.
And it is not automatically the softer choice in any given bed: the process makes a genuinely soft layer possible, but firmness is set by the layer that was ordered, so a firm Talalay layer is an ordinary thing to find.
The same latex, two processes
Both start in the same place: sap tapped from the rubber tree, whipped into a froth. What happens next is the entire difference, and everything people argue about downstream follows from it.
Both start as frothed latex sap. Dunlop fills the mould in one pour and bakes, so the heavier particles settle while it cures: the finished layer is denser, particularly towards the bottom, and feels firmer and less bouncy.
Talalay part-fills the mould, expands the froth with a vacuum until it fills the space, flash-freezes it to lock the cell structure in place, then bakes: the result is even from top to bottom, lighter and springier, and costs more to produce because the process takes longer and more equipment.
That is genuinely the whole story at the factory. Everything below is a consequence of settling versus freezing, and once you have that, the marketing on a product page mostly explains itself.

What we are not going to give you: ILD numbers, densities in kilograms per cubic metre, or a lifespan in years. Those figures vary by manufacturer and we have not verified any we would be willing to print.
Dunlop being denser is why it is commonly described as the longer-lasting of the two, and that is a reasonable inference from the density rather than a result we measured.

Four of those six say nothing about the process, and we have left them that way rather than guessing from the feel or the category. That pattern is worth carrying into your own shopping: if a listing does not name the process, the honest read is that you do not know, not that it must be one or the other.

The unnamed one at mattress scale is the Botanical Bliss, where the certification is documented in detail and the curing process simply is not, which is a useful reminder that an audited organic mark and a stated process are two different pieces of information.
How to choose between them
- Buying a topper to firm up a soft bed? Dunlop. You want density and support, not bounce, and it is usually the cheaper of the two on top of that.
- Buying a topper to soften a hard bed? Talalay, if you can find it, because it reaches genuinely soft where Dunlop tends to stay on the firm side.
- Buying a pillow? Talalay is the more common choice and the springier feel suits a head that has to be held at a steady height, which is why our own solid latex pillow pick is Talalay.
- Buying a mattress? Look at where each sits rather than at the name. A Dunlop core with a Talalay comfort layer is a common and sensible build; so is all-Dunlop. - On a budget? Dunlop, and not as a compromise. It is the denser, more supportive material of the two, so paying less is not buying less here.
- Want an even feel above all? Talalay. Consistency across the piece is the specific thing the freezing step buys you.
What the label does not tell you
The process is not a purity claim. Both Dunlop and Talalay can be made from pure natural latex, and both can be made from synthetic latex or a blend of the two, which behaves differently and generally costs less.
The word Talalay on a listing does not mean natural, and the word Dunlop does not mean organic. The thing to read is the material content, and then whatever certification stands behind it.
That is where a certification mark does real work. A mark like GOLS speaks to the organic latex content and how it was processed, not to whether the layer was moulded the Dunlop way or the Talalay way, so the two facts are independent and you want both. Claims about Talalay we do not repeat
Search Talalay latex and the same handful of statements comes back from page after page, because almost every page returning them sells the material. We are not going to reprint them, and it is more useful to say which ones and why than to quietly leave them out.
- That it is hypoallergenic, antibacterial, or resistant to mould, mildew, dust mites and bed bugs. These are health and hygiene claims. We do not publish health claims about bedding, we have not seen testing we could read behind them, and a claim of this shape is exactly the kind a shopper cannot check. It stays off this page in either direction: we are not saying the opposite either.
- That it breathes several times better than other foams. A specific multiple gets quoted for this. We have not found a published test behind the figure that we could read ourselves, so we do not repeat the number. What we will say is the structural part, which is checkable: latex is open cell, so air moves through it rather than being held, and that is true of Dunlop as well.
- That it feels like memory foam without the sinking. This one is a description of a sensation rather than a property, and sensations are not something we can verify for you. - That Talalay is the premium or higher quality latex. It costs more to make, which is a fact about the process, and that is not the same as being better in the layer you are buying. A support core has a job that Dunlop's density does well.
None of this makes Talalay a worse choice. It means the reasons to pick it are the ones in the section above, which you can check on a spec sheet, rather than the ones in the paragraph above, which you cannot.

What is Talalay latex?
