How to clean a mattress topper the right way
The single most important rule: if your topper is foam or latex, never put it in a washing machine or dryer. The agitation and heat tear the foam apart, and it may never bounce back.
Almost every ruined topper meets its end in a washer. Foam and latex are spot cleaned and air dried, not laundered. The part you actually wash is the removable cover, if your topper has one. Everything below follows from that one distinction, so start by checking whether yours has a zip-off cover.
The safe four-step routine
- Strip and vacuum. Take off the bedding and the zip-off cover. Vacuum the bare topper with an upholstery attachment to lift dust, hair and skin flakes from the surface and the sides.
- Spot treat stains. Blot, never rub. Use a few drops of mild detergent in a cup of water on a cloth, or an enzyme cleaner for sweat and urine. On latex, use detergent and water only: PlushBeds' own care instructions say never to use cleaning solvents or vinegar on latex. Keep the foam as dry as you can and lift the stain by blotting with a clean damp cloth.
- Deodorize. Sprinkle an even layer of baking soda over the whole topper, leave it several hours or overnight to pull out odours and moisture, then vacuum it all off.
- Air dry fully. Let it dry flat and completely before bedding goes back on. Trapped moisture inside foam is how mildew starts.
Cleaning the bed underneath the topper is a different job with different limits, because a mattress is far too thick to dry out once liquid gets inside it. We cover that, and what five mattress companies publish about it, in how to clean a mattress.
Getting stains and smells out
Speed matters more than product. A spill blotted the same day usually lifts with mild detergent and water; the same spill left to soak in and dry is a much harder job.
For anything biological, sweat, urine, accidents, an enzyme cleaner breaks down the residue that plain detergent leaves behind. For smells rather than marks, baking soda is the workhorse: it absorbs odour and a little moisture with no risk to the foam. A new topper that smells of the packaging is normal off-gassing, and airing it out for a day or two clears it.
What each material needs
| Material | Washing | Drying |
|---|---|---|
| Memory foam / gel foam | Spot clean only. Never machine wash or tumble dry. | Air dry flat, fully, before use |
| Latex | Spot clean only. No machine, no soaking. | Air dry away from direct heat and sun |
| Feather / down | Often machine washable on gentle, check the label first | Low heat with dryer balls, or air dry and fluff |
| Wool | Usually spot clean or hand wash; some are washable, check the label | Air dry flat, never wring |
| Removable cover (any topper) | Machine washable in most cases, this is the part you wash regularly | Follow the care label, often tumble low or air dry |
Always check your own care label first. The rule that never changes: foam and latex do not go in a machine, and the removable cover is the part you launder regularly. A washable cover is one of the quiet reasons a covered topper is easier to live with, something we flag in our Sleepyhead topper review.
Do you need to wash a new topper before using it?
No, and with a foam or latex topper you could not anyway. The core cannot be washed at any point in its life, new or old, so there is no first wash to perform.
What a new topper actually needs is air. Compressed foam off-gasses when you unbox it, which is the new-foam smell people are usually reacting to when they reach for the washing machine, and washing is neither the fix nor an option.
- Unroll it and let it breathe. Sleep Foundation's testers describe a distinct scent on new memory foam toppers and point to 24 to 72 hours of ventilation. Unbox in the morning rather than at bedtime and open a window.
- Wash the cover if you want to, not the foam. If the topper has a removable cover, that is the one part that can go in a machine, and washing it before first use is a reasonable thing to want. Follow its own care label.
- Low emissions is not the same as no smell. A CertiPUR-US or OEKO-TEX certificate describes what the material emits, not whether your nose notices the new-product smell. Both certified and uncertified foam arrive smelling of something.
If the smell is still there after a few days of airing in a ventilated room, that is worth raising with the seller while the return window is open, rather than something to launder away. Our Sleepyhead review works through this on a real product, including how the trial period interacts with it.
How often to clean it
- Every few weeks: wash the removable cover with your sheets.
- When it happens: spot treat spills the same day.
- Every few months: vacuum and deodorize the whole topper.
- Twice a year: rotate it head to foot so it wears evenly and airs out.

Common questions
Can you wash a memory foam mattress topper?
Not in a washing machine. Memory foam and latex must never go in a washer or dryer, because the agitation and heat tear and crumble the foam and it may never recover its shape.
You clean foam by spot cleaning the surface and letting it air dry fully. What you can machine wash is the removable cover, if your topper has one, and that is the part that needs regular washing.
How do I get a stain out of a foam topper?
Blot, do not rub, as soon as you can. Mix a few drops of mild detergent into a cup of water, dab it onto the stain with a cloth, then blot with a clean damp cloth to lift it.
For protein stains like sweat or urine, an enzyme cleaner works better. Skip vinegar on a latex topper: PlushBeds' own care instructions say never to use cleaning solvents or vinegar on latex. Keep the foam as dry as possible and never soak it, then let it air dry completely before putting bedding back on.
How do I get smells out of a mattress topper?
Baking soda is the simplest fix. Sprinkle a generous, even layer over the whole topper, leave it for several hours or overnight to absorb odours and moisture, then vacuum it off thoroughly with an upholstery attachment.
Airing the topper out in a well ventilated room, or briefly in indirect sun, also helps, especially with the off-gassing smell a new foam topper has for the first day or two.
How do you dry a mattress topper?
Air dry, flat, and completely. Lay the topper on a clean flat surface or drape it evenly and let air circulate on both sides.
Do not put foam or latex in a dryer, and keep it out of direct high heat and strong sun, which degrade the material. The one thing that matters most is that it is bone dry before you use it: trapped moisture inside foam grows mildew.
How often should I clean a mattress topper?
Wash the removable cover every few weeks, along with your sheets. Spot clean the topper itself only when something spills, and give the whole thing a baking soda deodorize and a vacuum every few months. Deal with spills the day they happen rather than letting them soak in, and your topper stays fresh with very little effort.
