Blood on sheets: cold water, and never the dryer
Cold water, at every stage, and nothing into the dryer until the stain is gone. Blood is a protein, and heat denatures protein and locks it into the fibre. A stain that would have washed out becomes permanent the moment it gets hot.
That single rule decides more than any product does. The rest is sequence: get to it while it is still wet if you can, rinse cold from the back of the fabric so the stain is pushed out rather than driven through, blot instead of rubbing, work in a detergent with enzymes and give it time.
Then wash cold and look at the fabric while it is still wet before it goes anywhere near heat. That last check is the step people skip, and the one that decides whether a faint mark becomes a permanent one.
Dried blood follows the same route with more patience and lower expectations. We do not publish a recipe with quantities for any of this, and there is a note below explaining why. This is laundry guidance, nothing more.
Why heat is the whole problem
Blood is largely protein, and protein changes structure permanently when it is heated. That is the same process you can watch in a frying pan: once it has set, nothing puts it back. In a sheet it means the stain stops sitting on and between the fibres and starts being part of them.
Two consequences follow, and both are counterintuitive if your instinct is that hot water cleans better. Hot water at the rinse or wash stage sets the stain rather than lifting it.
And the tumble dryer, the hottest step of all, comes at the end, after the point where most people stop looking. A stain that survived the wash and then went through a dryer is usually there for good.
The sequence, fresh blood
In order. The early steps matter more than the late ones.

The one checkpoint that decides the outcome. Fresh blood is rinsed cold from the back of the fabric, blotted rather than rubbed, treated with an enzyme detergent and left to soak, then washed cold. Dried blood takes the same route with a long cold soak first and lower expectations.
Both paths reach the same checkpoint: look at the fabric while it is still wet, in good light. If the stain is gone, dry it normally, because the heat is now harmless. If anything is still visible, treat and wash again, since the dryer would apply the heat that sets the remaining protein permanently.
What changes with dried blood
Not the method, only the patience and the expectations. A dried stain has bonded to the fibre, so the job starts with a long soak in cold water to soften and lift it before any detergent is worked in. Repeat the cycle rather than escalating: a second cold soak with enzymes does more than hot water or hard scrubbing ever will, and both of those actively make things worse.
Be honest with yourself about the outcome. Old, set stains often fade rather than vanish, and a sheet that has already been through a hot dryer with the stain in place is usually not recoverable. That is not a failure of technique; it is what setting means.
What makes it worse
- Hot water, at any stage. Including a "quick warm rinse" to get started. This is the mistake that turns a removable stain into a permanent one.
- The tumble dryer, before the stain is gone. The same mistake, at the point where you have stopped watching for it.
- Rubbing. It spreads a small dark mark into a large faint one and pushes it deeper into the weave.
- Chlorine bleach on coloured or patterned cotton. It damages the dye and weakens fibres over repeated use, and enzymes are what actually break down a protein stain.
- Waiting. Nothing else in this list costs you as much as time does. A rinse in the first few minutes beats any product applied the next morning.

You will find pages giving exact quantities, ratios and soak times for this, often with confident precision and no source. We have verified none of them, so we publish none of them. What we have given you instead is the mechanism and the order, because those are the parts that actually determine the result and they hold whatever is in your cupboard.
One place we do describe common practice: hydrogen peroxide is widely used on blood and reacts visibly on contact with it.
Two cautions travel with that. It can lighten dyed fabric, so test it somewhere hidden first, such as a hem or the part that tucks under the mattress, and it suits white cotton better than coloured or delicate fabrics. We are reporting what is commonly done rather than something we have tested.

The rules above are for the cotton and cotton-blend sheets most beds have. Two adjustments are worth knowing, and one instruction outranks everything on this page.
- The care label wins. If it disagrees with us, follow it. It is specific to the fabric in your hands and we are not.
- Weave does not change the method. A percale and a sateen behave the same way here, because the stain is in the fibre rather than in the weave. What the weave changes is how the sheet feels and wrinkles day to day.
- Fibre can change it. Silk and wool are protein fibres themselves, which is exactly why enzyme detergents are the wrong tool for them: the enzymes do not distinguish between the stain and the cloth.
